01 / About physiotherapy

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a registered health profession that assesses, diagnoses and treats problems with how your body moves and functions, including pain, injuries and recovery after surgery. Physiotherapists use hands-on treatment, exercise, education and advice to reduce pain, restore movement and build strength. In Australia physiotherapists are registered with AHPRA, and you can book one directly without a referral.

At RedoHealth we have a special interest in pain and injuries that keep coming back, but we see people at every stage, from a fresh sprain to a problem that has lasted for years.

How physiotherapy at RedoHealth is different

Longer, one-on-one appointments

Initial consultations are 60 minutes and follow-ups are generally 45 minutes, with the same physiotherapist in a private room. The extra time lets us understand your problem properly and, where appropriate, start treatment in the same visit.

We look beyond where it hurts

Where you feel pain isn’t always where the problem started. We assess how the rest of your body moves and what may be contributing, such as an old ankle sprain, the way you breathe or how you load your back at work.

ConnectTherapy™ and the Thoracic Ring Approach™

We use ConnectTherapy™ and the Thoracic Ring Approach™, whole-body frameworks developed by Canadian physiotherapist Dr Linda-Joy Lee. Brendan McGovern and Jane Le Fevre are Certified ConnectTherapy™ Practitioners, two of only four in Australia.

Physio and exercise physiology together

When you’re ready, your physiotherapist can introduce you to our accredited exercise physiologist and small-group classes, so your rehab carries on into long-term strength.

03 / How we treat

Physiotherapy treatments we use

Physiotherapy treatment at RedoHealth combines hands-on therapy, exercise rehabilitation and education, with dry needling, clinical Pilates, breathing retraining and classes added where they suit you. Your plan is built around what we find in your assessment and what you want to get back to.

Hands-on treatment

Joint mobilisation and manipulation, soft tissue and myofascial release, nerve mobilisation and taping, often done while you move rather than lying still.

Exercise rehabilitation

A progressive program to rebuild strength, mobility and control, with your home exercises on our exercise app so you know exactly what to do between visits.

Dry needling and acupuncture

Fine needles to ease overactive muscles and help settle pain, used where it suits your problem.

About dry needling

Reformer and mat exercise prescribed by your physiotherapist, one-on-one or in small groups, to build strength and control.

Book your first physio appointment

05 / Your first visit

What happens at your first physiotherapy appointment?

Your first physiotherapy appointment is 60 minutes, giving us time to understand your problem, assess how your whole body may be contributing, begin treatment and develop a clear plan forward. Follow-up appointments are generally 45 minutes.

We also offer a 90-minute initial consultation in certain circumstances, particularly for patients travelling into Sydney who benefit from more time for their first assessment. Call the clinic to book one.

  1. 1

    Your story and goals

We start by understanding what’s been happening, what affects your symptoms and, importantly, what you want to get back to, whether that’s sport, work, exercise or everyday life.

  2. 2

    A thorough physical assessment

We assess the area causing you trouble as well as how the rest of your body moves and functions. This may include movement, strength, joint and functional testing in the treatment room and gym.

  3. 3

    Treatment from your first visit

Where appropriate, treatment begins during your first appointment. This may include hands-on physiotherapy, movement strategies and exercises chosen specifically for what we find during your assessment.

  4. 4

    A clear plan forward

Before you leave, we’ll explain what we’ve found, what we think is contributing to your problem and what we recommend next. You’ll have a clear plan for your rehabilitation, including exercises where appropriate and guidance on follow-up care.

What to wear and bring

  • Loose, comfortable clothes you can move and exercise in, such as shorts
  • Shoes you can walk, squat or run in, as part of the assessment happens in the gym
  • Your private health fund card, or its digital version
  • Any scans, imaging reports or referrals you already have

09 / FAQs

Physiotherapy FAQs

Still unsure? Call the clinic on 02 8021 2180 and we’ll help, or see available times online.

More clinic FAQs

Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?

No. You can book physiotherapy at RedoHealth directly, without a GP referral. You only need paperwork if someone else is paying: a GP chronic condition management plan for Medicare, or your claim or plan details for workers compensation, CTP or the NDIS.

How soon can I get a physio appointment?

We can generally see new patients within the same week, and sometimes on the same day they book. You can see every physiotherapist’s available times on our online booking page, or call the clinic on 02 8021 2180 and we’ll find you a time.

How long is a physiotherapy appointment?

Initial consultations at RedoHealth are 60 minutes and follow-up appointments are generally 45 minutes. We also offer a 90-minute initial consultation in certain circumstances, particularly for patients travelling into Sydney who benefit from more time for their first assessment.

How much does a physio appointment cost?

An initial consultation costs $195 to $270 and a follow-up costs $155 to $202.50, depending on which physiotherapist you see. Private health rebates are claimed on the spot through HICAPS, so you only pay the gap.

Can I claim physiotherapy on private health insurance?

Yes. If your extras cover includes physiotherapy, we claim your rebate on the spot with HICAPS, including from a digital fund card. To check how much you’ll get back, give your fund item number 500 for an initial consultation or 505 or 506 for a follow-up.

Does RedoHealth bulk bill physiotherapy?

No, RedoHealth doesn’t bulk bill. You pay the fee on the day, and we claim your private health rebate on the spot through HICAPS, or process your Medicare rebate at the clinic if your GP has set up a Chronic Condition Management Plan.

Can I see a physio through Medicare?

Yes, if your GP has set up a Chronic Condition Management Plan for you. Eligible patients can access up to five allied health services a calendar year, and GPs often allocate some or all of these to physiotherapy. We don’t bulk bill, so you pay the full fee and we can process your Medicare rebate at the clinic.

Do you see workers compensation, CTP and NDIS patients?

Yes. We treat icare workers compensation and CTP (car accident) patients, and Brendan, Roisin and Lawrence are SIRA-registered physiotherapists, with Josh SIRA registered for exercise physiology. Call the clinic on 02 8021 2180 to book, and have your claim number, insurer and case manager’s contact details ready. RedoHealth is not a registered NDIS provider, but we can see self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants.

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

It depends on what’s going on. A recent, straightforward injury is usually easier to put a timeframe on than a longstanding or complex problem. At your first appointment we’ll explain what we’ve found, what we think is contributing, what treatment and rehabilitation will involve, the likely timeframe and the next steps.

Do I need a scan before seeing a physio?

In most cases, no. Your physiotherapist will assess you, let you know whether a scan would help and refer you to your GP or a specialist if needed. If you already have scans, bring the images and reports to your first appointment.

What should I wear to physiotherapy?

Wear loose, comfortable clothes you can move and exercise in, such as shorts and a top that lets us see your back and shoulders. Part of the assessment happens in the gym, so bring shoes you can walk, squat or run in.

What’s the difference between a physiotherapist and an exercise physiologist?

A physiotherapist assesses, diagnoses and treats injuries and pain using hands-on treatment, exercise and advice. An accredited exercise physiologist uses exercise to help people manage chronic health conditions and build long-term strength and fitness. At RedoHealth they work as a team: you can start with our exercise physiologist directly, or move across from physiotherapy when you are ready to build strength and capacity.

What is ConnectTherapy™?

ConnectTherapy™ is a whole-body approach to physiotherapy assessment and treatment developed by Canadian physiotherapist Dr Linda-Joy Lee. It looks for your drivers, the areas of the body that may be contributing most to your symptoms, which aren’t always where you feel pain. Brendan McGovern and Jane Le Fevre are Certified ConnectTherapy™ Practitioners.

When is the clinic open?

The Balmain clinic is open 7am to 7pm Monday to Thursday, 7am to 5pm on Fridays and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, so you can come before or after work. We are closed on Sundays.

Do you offer telehealth or home visits?

Yes to telehealth. Redo Online offers video consultations and guided programs with our clinicians, and we provide individualised home exercise programs through our exercise app where appropriate. We don’t routinely provide home visits.
