Meditation.
Mindfulness.
These are two key buzz words we hear today.
And everyone is doing it. Executives. Professional athletes. Actors. Even me.
I’m currently on a 147-day streak. 147 days! I must say, I’m proud of myself. The best I did before that was 109 or 110, but then I went to Hawaii on holidays. That was headspace enough. And the streak was broken.
Headspace.
The name of the app I use on my phone. Also. the feeling you get when you practice meditation or mindfulness daily. I use the Headspace® app, but there are many others out there – you just have to find what works best for you. You may not like Andy’s voice, but I do, so it works for me!
For best results, practice daily.
Opinions differ on how long you should meditate for. Some say a few minutes is enough while others go by the research, up to 45 minutes. At the end of the day, just get time in – some time for you. I’ve tried 10, 20, 30 minutes, but find that with the busy daily life, 10 minutes every morning before I walk the dogs does the trick!
Why do I meditate? Like most people these days I think too much. And thinking too much can make me anxious. Like you, I have too much on the go and I’m too connected – iPhone, laptop, Facebook, Instagram – there is a constant flow. It never stops.
Daily meditation or mindfulness is the first step to slowing things down. We all need to do more, I know I do.
What else can you do?
- Put down the phone, and be present with those around you.
- Put the laptop away and spend some time with a loved one.
- Leave your phone in your locker when you go the gym.
- Turn OFF your social media notifications.
- No screen time 30 minutes before bed and none until you’ve showered, dressed and had your breakfast!
