So, what exactly is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is knowing what is happening inside and outside yourself moment by moment.
The practice involves reconnecting with sensations and your body, thoughts and feelings. This allows you to create an awareness of the present moment. In this awareness, you can be in the present moment, whereby you become more aware of your emotions and patterns to help you notice and respond to changes in your mental health.
Most of us are often too caught up in what’s going on in our daily lives that we often forget there can be power and pleasure in being present in any given moment.
Life is a constant stream of stress, and often becomes too much to handle.
Have you ever gone away on a holiday, leaving the hustle and bustle of city life for the quiet country or relaxing beach resort?
Time seems to slow down or stop momentarily.
You become more acutely aware of what’s going on in your surroundings – the beautiful sights, the music, the culture.
You take photos, stop and smell the flowers or maybe just curl up with a good book. Time moves much slower…
When you return to city you are almost smacked over the head with the sounds and smells of city life.
You quickly yearn to go back to your holiday home for the peace and quiet.
But within a few days the relaxing holiday is a distant memory and you are just like everyone else, trying to make it through the rat race. (This is what I feel like every time I return home from my small hometown in Northern Canada).
